Central Florida Fair 4-H Citrus Tree Contest
has been in operation for more than 13 years.  There are a number of objectives, one of which
is to have an increased awareness of the Central Florida citrus industry.  A key part of the project is
the citrus grower, processor, packer and support industries which purchase the trees.

4-H membership is available to all youth ages 5-18 without regard to race, color, sex, handicap, religion, or ethnicity.  4-H'ers who are 5-7 years of age are ineligible to participate in competitive activities at any level.  However, they may exhibit or share project activities,  participation awards will be given to this age group.

2007-2008 ** Navels on Kuharske Carrizo rootstock.

Horticulturalist Award

Beginning in 2007 the 4-H Citrus Tree Project added “The Horticulturalist Award” to the project.  The criterion for the award is based on participation in the Citrus Tree Project, score on the knowledge test, quality of the record book, and quality of citrus tree.  The 2007 award winner was Rachael Stein of Orange County.   Rachael received a plaque and $500.00 as the award winner.

200 Navels on Kuharske Carrizo rootstock
Navel orange Harvest Oct to Jan Navels differ from other oranges by having a rudimentary secondary fruit embedded at the blossom end of the fruit. Premature yellowing and rot of this secondary fruit often results in premature fruit drop. Fruit peels relatively easily, sections well. If juiced, drink within several hours before a bitter flavor develops. Tends to require more precise irrigation and nutrition management. Two periods of fruit drop, early- and late-summer, account for 15-20% of the crop in some years.
Kuharske citrange.
The limited data available so far show that this rootstock, which originated in the Bay Lake, Florida nursery of Mac Kuharske, has good potential especially for oranges on the Ridge.  It has excellent tolerance to the burrowing nematode,
but otherwise is just like Carrizo, except its tolerance
to blight has not been determined.

   Some Citrus Tree contest info.
Each contestant will be given the opportunity to choose their own tree - after tree selection NO substitutions will be allowed.
Only trees from the original group will be eligible for exhibition in the fair.
TREE JUDGING:
Two weeks prior to 4-H Day each tree will be pre-judged & classified as B/R/W
by qualified judges.  All trees must be taken home. Blue rated trees will be eligible to be "shown" by the exhibitor,
you should return your tree the night of the sale. Separate classes will be held for JR & SR.  During this final
judging process, exhibitors should be prepared to answer questions related to the care of their trees.

PROJECT BOOK JUDGING:  Project books must be submitted by all CFF Citrus Contest participants.
At check in time, books will be screened for completion.  An exhibitor whose project book
does not meet completion criteria will be ineligible to enter the tree in the CFF.
JR & SR project books will be judged separately according to completeness, accuracy & overall neatness.
KNOWLEDGE TEST:  All participants MUST take the knowledge test.  Contestants will be required to ID varieties of citrus, parts of a tree, diseases, nutritional problems, and to answer questions relating to tree care & the citrus industry. JR & SR  will be judged separately.   Participants may take the test regardless of whether a tree is entered for judging.
TREE SALE:  Blue ribbon trees will be for sale to the public during the fair, sale of trees is optional.
Please note your desire at time of check in. Contest coordinators will attempt to recruit potential buyers for trees,
but exhibitors are ultimately responsible for recruiting their own buyers.
